July 2009

Yesterday I listed a few 8x10 photo prints in the shop. These three are printed on metallic paper - let me tell you, that stuff is amazing. When you have the right photo printed on that paper, it just pops.

Liberty 001

The colors are beautifully saturated; it looks as 3D as it can get without actually being 3D.

This one is called Liberty. You can read the original post or view the listing.

Liberty 002

I can't tell you how hard it was to pick the pictures I had printed. In the end, I just went for my favorites. Like this one. It's entirely possible that no one else will love it the way I do.

House for Rent 002

But if that's the case, I'm just going to hang it on the wall and continue to love it. So it's a win-win.

It's called House for Rent. You can read the original post or view the listing.

House for Rent 001

I got a few black and white photos in the metallic paper too and some in "true b&w" paper. For this one, I love it on the metallic.

Thicket 001

The grays are silver and the blacks are deep and rich. I could eat this photo with a silver spoon. It's not very often that I express that I love my own photos. Like most anyone else, sometimes I know that they're pretty good and sometimes I just hope that they are. But you can be sure that I won't list any photos that I don't think look absolutely great printed up.

This one is called Thicket. You can read the original post or view the listing.

Thicket 002

I have 10 or 11 to list total and my goal is to get three more up every day until they're all listed, so if you're interested keep checking back.

And speaking of black and whites, I'll be posting my favorite b&w photo that I've taken in July on August 1st. Please join me by leaving a comment to a link of your favorite b&w that you've taken on that post. And as always, you can post your b&w pictures to the flickr group all month long. Thanks!

No trouble in a bubble

I haven't had a lot to say here in the last week, so I just haven't said anything.

v bubbles 121

You see, my head is full of yarn right now and I'm pretty sure very few people want to hear about that all the time. Luckily I have a couple of people who are willing to listen to me go on about it.

v bubbles 048

But we're doing things that don't have to do with yarn too.

v bubbles 055

V made up a song the other day. Goes like this: "There's no trouble in a bubble, no trouble in a bubble. Bubble, bubble, bubble. I love bubbles."

v bubbles 110

So today - bubbles. And baking brownies (which will commence in about five minutes - V's calling me to come upstairs right now...).

v bubbles 087

What are you doing today? Something fun I hope.

Everybody wants to be a cat

So V is well into her 3rd month of being a cat all the time. She talks about cats non-stop, she calls the toilet the "litterbox," she calls her meals "cat food," she blows licks instead of kisses, she meows instead of talking. Aristocats runs on continuous play at our house lately.

So several weeks ago, I was on twitter and I DMd the lovely Sarah from Bit of Whimsy Dolls that if I could, I'd have her make a kitty especially for my own little cat. I love her dolls so much! Though I don't sew (yet!), my good friend Kim has made two Bit of Whimsy dolls for V and they're cute as pumpkin pie. When I didn't hear back from Sarah immediately, I came to my senses and realized what a forward/rude mama cat I am (just call me Duchess - V does)! I couldn't help it, though; it sounded like such a good idea to me.

Then, a couple of weeks later, Sarah alerted me to this. Of course I had to have one - the original - Violet kitty doll!

violet kitty 003

V loves her! She got decked out in her violet kitty shirt and took her Violet Kitty to Chateau Elan on Saturday.

violet kitty 004

They played on the rocks together and enjoyed the sunshine.

Then they reflected on life and wrote in their journals together.

violet kitty 005

Ok, that last bit is a stretch, but they did make fast friends, these two.

We always have room for one more (stuffed) kitty friend at our house! V likes to line them all up on her bed and sing to them.

violet kitty 006

If you sew and have/know a little girl who loves kitty cats, you too can have a Violet kitty in your life. Sarah also has one ready-made Violet doll in her Etsy shop today - same pattern, different fabrics, no less cute! And if you do make one (or a whole litter), please let me know - you can also post your pictures to the Bit of Whimsy flickr group for everyone to see.

Great first day!

Yay for opening my Etsy shop! And thanks a bunch to my first two customers. You both really made my day.

Here's my second order, packaged and ready to go.

2nd order 001

Today is a good day. I got some note cards in the shop and will list the other set later today, plus another yarn or two. It's starting to look like a real shop!

It's also my 7th wedding anniversary. Yay for #7! To celebrate, R is bringing home my favorite thai dish and V wants cupcakes. Sounds like a date to me.

For three days, I've been thinking this: "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." Can you name that movie? Anyone? Anyone?

Shop opening tomorry (+ how to get a lifetime 10% off)

When I told my mom my big plans for the spinning and the photos and the Etsy shop, she told me that my grandmother used to spin those little pads for Band-Aids at the mill where she worked. That's when I remembered this picture:

Grandmama at Chicopee

This whole yarn business was a spur of the moment decision, but it felt really right - so here we are. I like to think Grandmama would be cheering me on.

I'm opening the shop tomorrow with a few yarns, starting with this one. I'm calling it Fresh Cantaloupe. It's soft orange with a rind of very pale green. It's more of a mini-skein, really - not a lot of yardage, but it's chunky and squishy soft. For some reason, I'm particularly fond of it.

fresh cantaloupe 001

I have 12 finished yarns at the moment, but it will take me a few days to get them all listed. I'm planning for three a day. And I have more wool on its way that I can't wait to get my hands on. I'm starting off slow, but I've got lots of big plans for the future and I hope you'll join me.

I'll also have notecards in the shop - should be by the end of the week (but I'll let you know!). I'm starting with two different sets, three different scenes in each. One is a yarny theme and the other is more of a "things you see in the South" theme. But I plan to expand on that as well and to offer a few prints by next month. More about that soon.

Now for the good stuff - I want to give a few people a lifetime 10% off for being so kind as to place an order with me. So the first person to buy something from the yarn section and the first person to buy something from the photography section will get 10% off any order they place with me, forever. Also, because it's going to take a little while to fill the shop, anyone who buys something for the first month that the shop is open will be entered into a drawing to win a third lifetime 10% off.

So wish me luck & tell all your friends - I'm open for business tomorrow!

Then there came a day

I keep having these random childhood memories pop into my head. Not that I mind; I just feel the need to get them out.

Going to see an animated movie called Fantastic Planet. I would've been 4 years old.

Walking down the street after the movie, window shopping. This was when we lived in Washington DC. In my memory, it was the same day that we bought a twin mattress set for me. The ticking was this crazy pattern of muted blue and green flowers, with maybe a little yellow. Very 70s, it always reminded me of that movie.

My parents would sometimes take us to dinner at a friend's house. I remember lying on the sofa, pretending to be asleep so they wouldn't worry about getting me to bed and would continue talking so I could listen. I remember them saying they knew I was pretending. Then I remember waking up when it was finally time to go and being mad that I'd missed the conversation.

When we lived in DC, my parents had a friend named Janice. She had cats - lots and lots of them. My favorite was a Persian named Sasha. They told me not to bother her while she was eating, but I couldn't resist and she scratched me. I didn't tell anyone about it because I knew I wasn't supposed to be bothering her. I thought she was the most beautiful cat I'd ever seen.

Janice had lots of kittens too. She showed me an old dresser drawer where she had them all lined up in a row and covered in a light blanket so they could sleep. I dreamed about that for years. Those little puffs of fur! I wanted to gather them all up into my arms for a big hug.

Playing in the yard. I was probably 4. A man walked by and, ever friendly, I started talking to him. He kept walking, so I let myself out of the gate and started skipping happily down the street with him. My mom saw me from the window and yelled at me to come back inside the gate.

My beloved squishy Alice Bear. Brown and white, constantly dragging her behind me. Me wearing a dress my grandmother made out of fabric she'd also used for a quilt that I think my brother still has. Sitting on the steps, pigeon-toed and with said bear; I have a picture around here somewhere...

(You can join me over at Gayle's for more Monday Memories, if you have a moment.)

At long last, I have been immortalized - in chocolate!

Ok, not really. But now at least I can pretend.

v spicy maya 004

Spicy Maya - suits me, yes?

I think this may be the prettiest bar of chocolate I have ever seen.

v spicy maya 014

Cinnamony, spicy and sweet. The heat is pleasant - not too hot (I don't like really spicy food), but you can definitely feel it in your mouth. Delicious!

v spicy maya 008

I would like to be able to have a bag of 2oz. single serve chocolates so I could have one every day for the rest of my life. I really thought it was fantastic. I can't stop thinking about it and now I'm plotting when I can get my next bar (R found it at Walmart).

Chuao also makes other flavors, including a milk chocolate with Earl Grey bar and Firecracker Truffles that have popping candy inside that I'd love to try.

Yum yum yum!

Look what I got from Mireio

Pretty vintage salt & pepper shakers.

mireio s&p 01

They're so lovely, I want to hold them all day long.

mireio s&p 02

My kitchen was painted green by the previous owner. Not even a pretty green - more like split pea soup (not my favorite soup!). I had no idea what color I wanted to paint it, or what style to decorate it, but now I'm thinking I'll paint it a matching blue or a sunny yellow and add just a touch of vintage decor along with my plain white plates. Is it silly to decorate your kitchen around a set of salt and pepper shakers? I dunno, but it sounded logical to me as I was talking myself into buying them!

If you haven't yet seen Mireio on Etsy, check it out. Wende's store is full of calming candles, lovely spa pillows, just-right vintage finds, and more.

My minimoo cards

My minimoo cards came today! I'm so excited - they do such a good job.

my minimoo cards 021

If I'm not here on this blog often over the next couple of weeks, it's because I'm there - in the land of possibility. It's an intriguing place; I've never been there in quite this same way before. But I'm marking items off my list, getting things done as quickly as I can, looking forward to opening shop soon.

my minimoo cards 029

I spread these cards out on my kitchen table this afternoon and thought, that's my life over the last year and a half. Kinda cool.

July 1st in b&w

I'm always afraid when I take portraits of other people. I so want to capture their essence. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't.

But in these four photos, I believe I have truly captured the essence of V as she is today. I was taking pictures of my yarn in color and she wanted to hold it for me (that's when I took the picture that is the header for my soon-to-be-open Etsy shop). But she was being so sweet and so thoughtful, that I switched to b&w mode just to see what would happen.

v blue loves purple 031

In the next two I asked her to show different emotions. She loves it when I do that because eventually it leads to me asking her to be silly and she gets to jump up and down and act crazy. I have lots of V jumping in the air shots. A lot of times she won't smile when I ask for happy (or she just opens her mouth wide), but that day she gave me several big grins.

v blue loves purple 041

This is her sad face. This is so very V when she pretend pouts.

v blue loves purple 044

In this one, I wasn't directing her; we were very relaxed and not talking at all. I like the soft focus, her hand on her cheek, and the position of her head. Not your typical portrait of a 3-year-old - it's my favorite of the day.

v blue loves purple 067

If you have a b&w to share, please leave a link in the comments below - I can't wait to see them! You can also join my group on flickr and add your b&w photos any time of the month. Thanks!
